Book Reviews
Walden by Thoreau Imagine building a cabin from recycled materials, squatting on a friend's land and spending two years living with nature. No the setting isn't California but rather 1840's New England. "Walden" was said to have inspired such men as Ghandi, Dr. Martin Luther King and Ikeda. Part diary, part historical philosophy, part political thesis, Walden brings readers of the 21st century back to the simple principles of living life at its most meaningful level. How does this book effect a simple folk harpist from Michigan? Folk musicians typically set aside the high tech for that of a tried and true design and method of an ancient instrument. Walden and music have so much in common that this is a must read. Einstein's Violin Written by real life composer, this book is an account of life through music as it bridges subjects as vast as String theory of physics and saves lives in political war. I am recommending this book to all of my students for reading and insight. Newly released, it is available in large chain book stores. It is my hope that it will inspire those in music to learn about science and other cultures and vise versa. |
